  • Are you thinking of having a family in the near future?

It’s highly recommended that you see a GP before you begin actively trying (about three months is ideal). This will give you time to discuss, and consider if necessary, questions such as:

    1. Are you on a prenatal supplement?

    2. Are you up-to-date with your pap smears?

    3. Is your thyroid function normal?

    4. Do you need a booster for rubella or chicken pox? (or any other vaccinations?)

    5. Have you seen a dentist in the last 6 months?

    6. Is your private health insurance adequate?

    7. Do you or your partner have any health issues that need stabilising?

    8. Do you or your partner have a family history of inherited condition? (E.g. cystic fibrosis)

  • Having a baby? Are you aware of your antenatal care options? One option available is GP Antenatal Shared care.

This is a program where you share your routine visits between your GP and the hospital (RPAH or Canterbury Hospital).

This may be more convenient for you and it also means you will have already established a relationship with a GP when looking for a family doctor for your new baby.

The Shared care program has been going for over 20 years in the Inner West and involved GPs are fully accredited and participate in ongoing medical education.

Some, but not all of the practice's GPs provide this care, please approach our reception team for further information.

  • One in six couples has some difficulty getting pregnant, with women over the age of 35 years having a higher incidence of fertility problems.

If you have been trying to conceive for 12 months (or 6 months if you are over 35) without success you should book an appointment with your general practitioner.

They will take a history, arrange some basic tests and refer you to a fertility specialist.

  • Leichhardt GP provides child and adult immunisations according to the recommended immunisation schedules.

Childhood immunisations occur at the ages of 2, 4, 6, 12 and 18 months, and again at 4 years, along with additional influenza vaccinations.

Some common adult immunisations include influenza, pneumococcal and boosters for whooping cough. However, immunisations for adults are also specific to individual health needs, so you may need an appointment to discuss what is best for you.
