Helpful information

What does it mean that Leichhardt General Practice is an Accredited General Practice?

Leichhardt General Practice is an Accredited General Practice, with the Royal Australian College of General Practice and the Australian General Practice Accreditation Limited Group.

This means that every three years the practice undergoes assessment to ensure that we are practicing at the highest possible quality and safety standards.  This relates to clinical governance, patient care, risk management, infection control and all other aspects of healthcare delivery.

Confidentiality and Privacy for your Health Information

Patient medical records are kept in the strictest confidence in concordance with the standards set by the Australian Medical Association and Royal Australian College of General Practitioners.  We have a practice Privacy Policy which is accessible on our website.

Patients do have a right to access their medical record in accordance with the Privacy Amendment Act 2002.

Interpreter Service

If you require an interpreter for your appointment, including an AUSLAN interpreter, please contact our front desk prior to your appointment so that we can arrange one for you.  We can be contacted via phone on (02) 9561 0300 or email on admin@leichhardtgp.com.au.

Culture

When you register at the practice and periodically when you are seen, you will be asked by the doctors what your ethnic or cultural background is.  This is so the doctors who work at Leichhardt General Practice can best tailor preventative health care to your individual needs.

Feedback

We welcome feedback from our patients and will strive to continue to improve.  The best way to provide feedback is to contact our office manager on practicemanager@leichhardtgp.com.au or (02) 9561 0300.

If you would like to take the matter outside of the practice, you can contact the Health Care Complaints Commisiton on (02) 9219 7444.

Register of Health Information

The clinical staff at Leichhardt General Practice do participate in the Australian Immunisation Register and the National Cervical Screening Register which means that as a patient of the practice you will receive reminders from these organisations when your child’s immunisation or your cervical screen is due.  You can opt out of these registers by contacting the Australian Immunisation Register or the National Cancer Screening Register.

Leichhardt General Practice also keeps track of when certain tests are due, and you will get SMS reminders from us when your doctor or nurse would like you to return for review or repeat screening.

My Health Record

This is an online summary of your health information.  It is managed by the Department of Health but doctors working at Leichhardt General Practice can upload a health summary or event summary to your health record for you.  You can access this and control who else has access such as hospital staff, specialists and allied health professionals.  You can also opt out if you do not want to have a health record.

MyMedicare

If you are an Australian Citizen with a Medicare card or Department of Veterans Affairs card, you can now register in your “myGov” account to a specific practice.  You need to have been seen as a patient of that practice in person at least twice in the proceeding 24 months.  You can also ask one of our front desk staff to register you at our practice.  Being registered to Leichhardt General Practice does not mean that you cannot be seen at another practice, it just gives you access to longer telephone consultations and will likely give you access to more benefits being rolled out by the government in 2024.

Communication

The doctors who work at Leichhardt General Practice do not usually call patients outside of a booked phone consult.  However, they will send courtesy SMS reminders and recalls for appointments, when a vaccination is due, or a screening test is due or review of a chronic medical condition.  You may also receive an SMS indicating that your doctor would like to discuss a non-urgent test result with you.

You will not receive any advertising material from us.

Blood tests and Imaging

We have Douglas Hanly Moir onsite.  In most cases, you do not need an appointment and can simply walk in.  The doctors who work at Leichhardt General Practice can also give you forms for Laverty or other pathology collection centers.

We do not have imaging facilities onsite.  We often refer patients to I-Med radiology in Newtown, Drummoyne or Five Dock or Quantum in Leichhardt.

Results

We ask patients to make either a phone, video or face to face appointment for their results to prevent any miscommunication of important medical information and to maintain confidentiality.  If a result which requires urgent medical attention is received, we will contact you.

On the Day Appointments

We do reserve some same day appointments for our patients who are in need of urgent medical attention from a GP.  These are available from 8:00am.

If the case of an emergency, always ring 000.
